YL Freedom Walk Malawi Devotions: Day 13

Freed For Freedom

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by the yoke of slavery” Galatians 5:1

Dr. David Livingstone played a huge part in bringing freedom to people and bringing Christianity to Malawi . From as early as primary school we learn about him and his mission trips around the country.

There is a tree in Mbame, an area around Mpemba/chazunda that is over a 100 years old. According to local historians, Dr. Livingstone rested there sometime and while he was there he managed to free some slaves.

Imagine if the people he freed continued to wear shackles around their neck even after they were freed. That would make all that Dr. Livingstone did to free them was pointless.

In a way we do the same thing, we have been free from physical slavery yet hold on to all that our ancestors would do when they were slaves. Favoritism, tribalism, passivity in men, hatred and jealousy in families all these were very common among our ancestors. And also in us.So are we really free?

Even Spiritually we hold on to chains that Christ already broke. We have been freed let’s walk in freedom, that Christ has already given us physically and Spiritually.

Gal 5:13-14 you, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge in flesh, rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled by keeping one command: “Love your neighbour as yourself”

Prayer: That God will free us from all the results of slavery
That he would make us selfless and servant leaders.
That we would be people who embrace the freedom that our Lord Jesus gives.
