50 Shades Of Grey: No Thanks I’ll Pass!

So the 14th of February is coming up, (side note; it’s my birthday:-p), but this year apart from Valentine’s Day people seem to have another thing on their mind today, Yes I am talking about Fifty shades of Grey. The movie based off one of the best-selling books of all time (over 100 Million copies sold to date), premieres in America Tomorrow (Saturday the 14th), and soon people here in Malawi will have the bootleg version of it. For those who do not know what I’m talking about here is a Synopsis of the movie from IMDB:

“When Anastasia Steele, a literature student, goes to interview the wealthy Christian Grey, as a favor to her roommate Kate Kavanagh, she encounters a beautiful, brilliant and intimidating man. The innocent and naive Ana started to realize she wants him, despite his enigmatic reserve and advice, she finds herself desperate to get close to him. Not able to resist Ana’s beauty and independent spirit, Christian Grey admits he wants her too, but in his own terms. Ana hesitates as she discovers the singular tastes of Christian Grey – despite the embellishments of success, his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family – Grey is consumed by the need to control everything. This week, I could not turn on the television without being bombarded with scenes from this racy movie, and I’m writing this post to discourage you my friends from watching this movie. Whether you see it in a friends hard drive, or PC, or on the internet or someone recommends I sincerely urge you not to submit to the temptation of watching this highly anticipated movie. I will give reasons as to why I say this, all around the internet a lot of blogs and bloggers that I follow have also tackled this issue and so far these are reasons they gave that I feel the same way about:

  1. “Don’t watch Christian Grey do whatever he would like to Anastasia Steele and expect it to heal that deep hurt and need for intimacy in your own heart. Only Jesus can do that. Only Jesus can speak to the places in our hearts that need to feel alive and loved again.”- http://www.scissortailsilk.com/2015/02/10/christian-women-and-christian-grey/ (http://www.michellelazurek.com)
  2. “Romantic fantasies almost always go hand in hand with sexual arousal and lustful imaginations. As Christian girls, we know that all forms of sexual pleasure are created for one purpose only – marriage. Outside of marriage God calls it sinful lust. Song of Solomon says, “Promise me, O women of Jerusalem, not to awaken love until the time is right.” As modern women we have countless opportunities to “awaken love before the time is right,” so we must be extra careful with what we watch, read and listen to.” http://www.girldefined.com/romantic-fantasies-get-you
  3. “One of the worst side effects of engaging your mind in romantic fantasies is that it distorts your definition of love. When you constantly fill your mind with dazzling sensual movies and unrealistic romance novels…real life romance might seem a little bland. Without even knowing it, you create huge expectations for what your “future husband” must look like, act like, talk like, and treat you like. You create a dream world of romance that is completely centered around one thing – you. This is a very false and selfish picture of true love.” http://www.girldefined.com/romantic-fantasies-get-you
  4. “In a healthy marriage relationship, each partner submits to each other out of respect and love for each other, but there will be times when you have reached an impasse in the situation. God calls you to submit spiritually in those situations for the health of your relationship. This is so you can find a solution that unites you, not divides you. Allowing yourself to be whipped and beaten for the satisfaction of your partner is far from achieving unity. It takes away your right to establish and keep healthy boundaries regarding personal and physical space. It is never ok for a man to make you do anything you don’t want to do. If he does something against your will, it is not your fault: it’s his. This movie blurs the lines between what is healthy for women, and what is not.” http://www.movieguide.org/news-articles/letter-daughter-eve-fifty-shades-grey-premiere.html#.VNMudLq0nQo.twitter (Side Note: this is probably my favourite response)
  5. “Sin promises to please, but subtly and destructively wounds.” http://www.desiringgod.org/blog/posts/fifty-shades-of-nay-sin-is-a-needle-not-a-toy
  6.  “Sex, as God designed it, is not meant for actors who pretend (or not) that they are making “love.” The act of conjugal union is what married couples do behind closed doors, not what disciples of Jesus Christ pay money to watch on a screen the size of your house.” http://www.thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/kevindeyoung/2015/02/11/no-grey-area/

“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak (Matthew 26:41)”
