Hey fam, welcome to the first edition of the thinking biblically series, the goal is to look to the bible and see what it says about a certain subject. Today we will be looking about what the bible says about…. The Bible! I thought it wise to begin here because the bible does govern our thoughts and theology on everything else.
Many theologians have written great materials on the doctrine of scripture, that will not be my focus today. I will be summarizing what the bible says about scripture, I narrowed what i found to the following points:
- Inspired: 2 Timothy 3:16. The word inspired in this verse is sometimes translated as ‘breathed out by God’, ‘spoken by God’ or ‘Of divine origin’, all these translations help us understand that scripture is not like any other theological book we read. It is the very word of God, as Justin Peters once put it “If you want to hear God speak, read your bible out loud”.
- Eternal. Psalm 119:160, Isaiah 40:8, Matt 24:35. The word of the Lord is eternal, it will live forever and as the psalmist puts it “it endures forever”
- Perfect and true. Psalm 19:7-8, Psalm 18:30, Psalm 119:160, Matt 5:18. God’s word is perfect and upright, it is infallible and inerrant. It is perfect because God is perfect, it is true because God is trustworthy.
- Profitable. 2 Timothy 3:15-16. The scriptures make us wise to salvation, faith comes by hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17), it is profitable for reproof, correction and for training in righteousness equipping the man of God in every good work. Hebrew 4:12 calls it the double-edged sword that is living and active piercing the hearts of men. An as the psalmist puts in Psalm 19, it refreshes the soul and enlightens the eyes.
Why is it important to study this?
The bible is the governing authority for every Christian, everything we believe about God comes from the bible. What ever we believe about the bible will affect how we see the world, a high view of scripture leads to a high view of God. Many people have committed high theological errors and even preached heresies simply because they do not have the right view of scripture (Recent example would be Jory Micah who believes God can be referred to as mother).
So much can be said on scripture, men that a far greater theologians than I am, have written on this topic, this article was merely scratching the surface. The aim for this series is to inspire both the reader and the writer to dig deeper in the word of God and have a Christian world view.
